Reykjavík

Planen Sie genügend Zeit ein, um diese kleine, aber eindrucksvolle Hauptstadt zu erkunden. Trotz ihrer überschaubaren Größe gibt es viel zu sehen und zu erleben. Um sich zu orientieren, fahren Sie mit dem Aufzug auf die Spitze der Hallgrímskirkja. Diese von dem berühmten isländischen Architekten Guðjón Samúelsson entworfene Kirche zählt zu den markantesten Gebäuden der Stadt. Bei Ihrer Rückkehr an Land besuchen Sie das weitere weithin bekannte Gebäude der Stadt, die Harpa Concert Hall, im Herzen von Reykajvíks wiederbelebtem Hafen – zugleich Sitz des Maritimen Museums. Kulturinteressierten sei ein Besuch des Nationalmuseums empfohlen, um die Geschichte Islands von der Vergangenheit bis zur Gegenwart kennenzulernen. Das Reykjavík Kunstmuseum beherbergt eine beeindruckende zeitgenössische Sammlung, darunter markante Werke von Erró. Und natürlich liegt nur 50 Kilometer außerhalb der Stadt der Þingvellir-Nationalpark, Schauplatz des ursprünglichen isländischen Wikingertings.

Dynjandi-Wasserfall

Als einer der beeindruckendsten Wasserfälle Islands vermittelt der donnernde Dynjandi im Westfjords die Anmut eines Brautschleiers, wenn er sich in immer größer werdenden Kaskaden hinunterergießt. Der Spaziergang dauert etwa 15 Minuten und passiert fünf kleinere Wasserfälle.

Flowers & Fjords

The Flowers & Fjords tour takes you on an adventurous journey through a mountain tunnel and across the Westfjords mountains to the fjords of Dýrafjörður and Önundarfjörður. Enjoy breathtaking views of spectacular landscape carved out by glaciers ages ago. Flateyri village and its surrounding area boasts of many singular experiences. Join us on a tour to this quiet place where the country’s first botanical garden was created. The view during the drive to our destination features narrow, steep passes and deep, sheltered fjords where farms and villages huddle on a narrow strip of land, bearing witness to the pioneering spirit of man. The first stop on our journey is Skrúður, Iceland’s first botanical garden founded in 1905. It was the realisation of a dream that the minister and principal at the school at Núpur had. The garden was to be used to teach the students botany, introduce them to a more vegetable-rich diet and examine which plants were able to grow in the sub-Arctic climate of the Westfjords. From Núpur we’ll continue to the village of Flateyri. The village is located on a gravel spit that was formed around shark fishing the middle of the 19th century. Here we will visit the local church to enjoy a musical performance. From the church the guide will take us on a leisurely stroll down the small main street of the village with a visit to a coffee-shop where we enjoy refreshments made locally. Next door to the café you can visit the old bookstore or enjoy the view by the harbour.

Holt Inn Farmers & Flavours

Bær farm in Stadardalur Valley is run by young farmers who pride themselves in the sustainable farming of sheep as they roam around freely during summertime. Listen to their struggle but also why they have chosen to live in such an isolated place. Get to know the history of the valley as well, which at one point was inhabited by multiple farms and one of the first places in Iceland to be settled by the Vikings. After the walk you will have a chance to interact with the farm animals and enjoy Icelandic delicacies. We'll stop at a fishing hut with a view of the oldest mountain in Iceland. Listen to a story about the Mountain Giant lady that watches over the road. Before the tour is over you get to try some of the best tastes that Isafjordur has to offer while taking in spectacular views of the town. The tour ends by the harbour next door to your cruise ship, at Dokkan Brewery, where you will receive a voucher for a free beer. Grímsey

Grímsey ist eine abgelegene Insel, etwa 40 km vor der Nordküste Islands gelegen. Viele Besucher kommen hierher, um den Arktischen Kreis zu betreten – der einzige Ort in Island, an dem das möglich ist. Life in the Arctic Circle

Grimsey is Iceland’s northernmost inhabited territory. The island straddles the Arctic Circle and has a small population of approximately 86 inhabitants. We’ll begin by walking from the pier towards the Arctic Circle with our local guide who will point out interesting natural and historical sites on the island. Grímsey has been inhabited for centuries and has often faced hardships. The waters around the island are abundant in marine life and the island cliffs are teeming with birds in spring and summer. We’ll walk over the Arctic Circle and then head to the bird cliffs where we should be able to spot several species of birds – including puffins, guillemots, gulls and other auks. The most energetic guests will probably want to continue their journey at their own pace towards the artwork Orbis & Globus that was inaugurated in 2017. It is a 3-metre sphere which is meant to be moved around the north end of the island in accordance with the movement of the Arctic Circle. The walk is approximately 7,5 km long including some fairly steep inclines but is well worth the effort. We recommend that you dress in warm layers and wear good and sturdy walking shoes. If guests want to continue the walk around the island and towards the lighthouse, the total distance is approx. 12 km. Kindly note that the sightings of sea birds is dependent on season and weather.

Leisurely Hike with Your Swan Hellenic Team

Discover this beautiful island with your Expedition team, its tranquil environment, its scenic beauty and its variety of wildlife. Hrísey is the second-largest island off the coast of Iceland, and it has been continuously inhabited since Iceland’s settlement in the 9th century. The island is comprised of basalt and its upper lair of moraine (which is glacier debris, soil and rock) and it is well vegetated. Among the many plants found on the island are wooly willow, tea-leaved willow, common juniper and dwarf birch. The island is famous for being a birdwatcher’s heaven; since there are no natural predators on the island, it’s become a bird sanctuary with forty native species of birds. Hrísey has the largest breeding colony of arctic terns in Europe and many types of moorland birds live on the island as well. The ptarmigan, a bird in the grouse family, is common there. Its snow-white winter colouring is particularly impressive, as are its feathered legs: a rare characteristic for birds.

Húsavík

Húsavík mit Blick auf die Skjálfandi-Bucht ist berühmt für seine Walbeobachtungen, besonders des gefährdeten Blauwals. Das städtische Wal- und Entdeckungsmuseum widmet sich der Wikingergeschichte und dem Apollo-Astronautentraining, das in der Nähe stattfand. Die Stadt beherbergt zudem das älteste isländische Haus aus dem Jahr 860 n. Chr. Húsavík liegt am Arctic Coast Way und ist Startpunkt der Diamond-Circle-Route. In der Nähe ist der Kaldbakur-Teich ein beliebter geothermischer Badeplatz, der auf eigentümliche Weise mit Goldfischen bevölkert ist.

Húsavík & GeoSea Baths

The journey begins at Húsavík Church, a charming wooden structure built in 1907, before continuing to Skrúðgarðurinn, the town’s picturesque gardens. Here, the bubbling Búðara stream winds through the landscape, with small wooden bridges crossing its path. You’ll also visit the site of Iceland’s oldest known house, built by Swedish explorer Garðar Svavarsson in the winter of 870, and a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the harbour—once the historic heart of the town and still a vital part of the local community. Along the way, history, culture, and folklore come to life through fascinating stories and surprising local legends. The final part of the tour takes you to the northern hilltop, home to the Húsavík lighthouse. From here, enjoy breathtaking views of Skjálfandi Bay, where you may even spot whales in the distance. Whale Watching & Whale Museum

Húsavík is considered the capital of whale watching in Iceland due to its wide open bay, rich marine life and excellent spotting rates. This tour offers the unique opportunity to enjoy magnificent wildlife and to witness whales and birds in their natural habitat. We’ll start by visiting the informative Whale Centre. The centre provides detailed and interesting information about whales and their habitat. The Whale Centre is one of the most visited places in the north of Iceland and has ample room to display whale skeletons of several species and fascinating facts about whales. After our visit to the Whale Centre we’ll take a short walk to the pier. We’ll then board the whale watching boat where the friendly crew welcomes us and informs us of the various species which may be seen during the trip. The boat takes us to the pristine marine waters of Skjálfandi Bay where we’ll keep a lookout for whales and dolphins. Like all wild nature experiences, sightings cannot be guaranteed. However, the potential for whale watching from Húsavík is excellent. We reserve the right to reverse the itinerary if necessary or operate the tour in a different order to that described. Jewels of the North

This popular tour encompasses the highlights of Northern Iceland – the magical Lake Mývatn, the bubbling mud-pots and fumaroles of Námaskarð, the mystical lava landscape of Dimmuborgir and the vivid green pseudo-craters at Skútustaðir. The first stop on our journey is Námaskarð, a striking geothermal field full of mud-pots, steam vents, sulphur deposits, boiling springs and fumaroles. The experience is otherworldly like, with incredible colours, steam that rises from the earth and the loud popping of air bubbles in the mud-pots. Close by is Dimmuborgir, a dramatic lava landscape with strange formations, columns and arches that have been the source of many folktales in Iceland. The name means “dark fortress”, an appropriately mystical name for this peculiar place. A short drive from Dimmuborgir is Skútustaðir pseudo-craters. The craters were formed by gas explosions when boiling lava flowed over the wetlands near the lake. The craters are a popular site for birdwatches and are protected as a natural wetland conservation area. Finally, we visit Goðafoss Waterfall, “the Waterfall of the Gods”, afterwards we enjoy a scenic drive back to Húsavik and our ship. Bodø

Bodø rückt sein samisches Erbe in den Mittelpunkt und verbindet Kunst mit seiner arktischen Umgebung. Nach dem Luftangriff von 1940 wiederaufgebaut im modernistischen "Wiederaufbaustil", prägen bis heute das 2014 eröffnete Konzerthaus Stormen und Molobyen als neues kulturelles Zentrum am Wasser das Stadtbild. Umgeben von Natur liegt Bodø nahe dem weltberühmten Strudel Saltstraumen, einem mächtigen Wirbel auf dem Saltsfjorden, besonders stark bei den täglich wechselnden Gezeiten.

Norwegian Aviation Museum and City sights

Bodø received its township status in 1816 and flourished during the prosperous herring fisheries of the late 19th century. On May 27, 1940, the city’s history took a dramatic turn when a massive German air raid reduced much of Bodø to rubble in just two and a half hours. The extensive post-war rebuilding reshaped the city into what you see today. Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Bodø is now the administrative and commercial hub of Nordland County, with a population of over 46,500. Your tour begins with a short drive through the city, passing several of Bodø’s key landmarks before stopping at the Rønvikfjellet viewpoint. At 538 feet above sea level, this lookout offers sweeping views over the city, surrounding mountains, and coastline. You then continue to the Norwegian Aviation Museum. Seen from above, the building resembles a giant propeller and houses more than 107,000 square feet of aviation history. Opened in 1994 as Norway’s national museum for both civil and military aviation, its engaging exhibits appeal to visitors well beyond aviation enthusiasts. Highlights include iconic aircraft such as the Spitfire, CF-104 Starfighter, JU 88, and the U-2 spy plane, alongside legendary workhorses like the JU 52, Twin Otter, and F28. After approximately 1.5 hours exploring the museum, you rejoin your coach for the return journey to the ship.

Bodo by e-Bike

See, hear, smell and feel – join a guided e-bike tour to Bodø’s lookout point #1 Keiservarden and experience the lovely scenery on your way. On the return from Keiservarden, there will be some storytelling and photo stops by the city’s attractions. The tour first takes you out of the city to Maskinisten at the entrance of Bodømarka leisure area. Here, 320 meters of altitude await on a 4 km gravel road and a nice little path. If you think this sounds strenuous, wait until you've tried our electric mountain bike uphill! You will certainly be warm, but not shorter of breath than you find comfortable. At the top we take our time and enjoy the 360 degrees view while getting some water, coffee, and snack to keep hydrated and energetic. On a good day we can see from Sweden in the east to the Lofoten islands in the northwest. A couple of downhill biking tips and tricks are handed out before we follow the same road down again. Following the paths along the Bodøelv river we return to civilization and the city sightseeing part of the tour. A Glimpse of Saltstraumen

Following a brief city tour, embark on a scenic drive to the Saltstraumen Visitor Center, dedicated to Norway's awe-inspiring natural spectacle—the dynamic tidal shifts at Saltstraumen. Upon arrival, you can observe the spectacle from the bridge or stroll along footpaths leading to the water's edge. This mesmerizing event has earned the distinction of being one of the Wild Wonders of Europe. The sheer scale is staggering—400 million tons of water swiftly surge through a strait less than 500 feet wide. At its peak, the current races at an astonishing 23 miles per hour. Equally remarkable is the tranquility that follows when the tide reverses. This powerful flow carries vast amounts of Krill, attracting an abundance of fish and making it a popular destination for fishing and competitions. Where there are fish, you'll also find a multitude of sea-birds. Enjoy a coffee break at the Saltstraumen Hotel, before returning to the town.

Svartisen, Svartisen-Gletscher

Der mächtige Svartisen-Gletscher, Norwegens zweitgrößter, ergießt sich den Berg hinab fast bis zum See Svartisvatnet. Das Besucherzentrum des Gletschers ist ein faszinierender Ort mit Zugang zu Wanderungen entlang des Randes des Eisstroms, der bis zu 200 m dick sein kann. Der prächtige Holandsfjord liegt nur am anderen Ende eines kurzen Sundes vom See entfernt und bietet dem Schiff ergreifende Ausblicke. Das kleine Dorf Holandsvika liegt gegenüber am Fjord, mit einem 18 km langen Uferweg und Bootsfahrten.

Hike towards Svartisen Glacier with your Swan Hellenic Expedition Team

Hike with your Expedition team to one of Norway’s most impressive natural wonders. Svartisen, the country’s second-largest glacier, covers more than 370 km² and fans out into an extraordinary network of 60 glacier arms. Your adventure begins with a scenic Zodiac landing on a pebble beach in Glomfjord. From here, your Expedition team will lead a guided hike of around two hours at a moderate pace. The trail takes you approximately 1.5 km to a striking glacier lake, where sweeping views of the Svartisen Glacier dominate the landscape. Along the way and at the viewpoint, your onboard geologist will bring the scenery to life, explaining the glacier’s formation, movement, and unique features—adding depth and context to this unforgettable Arctic hiking experience.

Svolvær, Lofoten

Svolvær ist ein klassischer norwegischer Fischerhafen, versteckt auf Austvågøya in den Lofoten. Umgeben von Gipfeln und Stränden, Buchten und zerklüfteten Einschnitten ist es ein Zeitbild aus weißen und roten Holzfassaden, das klare Wasser bevölkert von kleinen, schaukelnden Booten. Beliebt bei Bergsteigern, bietet der Hausberg Fløya einen spektakulären Aussichtspunkt über den Hafen und den Vestfjord.

Walking Tour of Svolvaer, Svinoya and Ice Bar

Svolvær is the so-called “Capital” of the Lofoten Archipelago – with ca. 4500 inhabitants. It started off as a fishing village – and still the fishing industry is the most important income for the town. The first part of the walk will be through the centre of town – and the guide will give you insights into the history, architecture, nature and culture. Head northwards towards the 359 metre long Svinøy Bridge – opened in 1964. From the middle of the bridge there is a fine view to the island, the town and the scenic surroundings with steep mountains. At Svinøya Island – originally the oldest part of Svolvær – you will learn about the importance of Lofoten and especially Svolvær for artists – especially painters. They are inspired by the wild nature, intense colours and light – and there are several galleries (no entrances included) . You'll also see colourful fishermen’s cabins – originally built to house fishermen coming from all over the coast to the rich Lofot Fisheries - but now modernized as holiday homes. There are also the characteristic stockfish racks – often referred to as Stockfish Cathedrals. They are used to dry fish into Stockfish during winter – and though there are no fish during the summer the guide will explain their use. Continue the walk to the breakwater and view to the Statue of the “Fisherman’s Wife” situated on a cliff in the sea. Walk back via the same road to Svolvær centre and visit the Ice Bar to enjoy a cold drink. Note: This walking tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. Lofotr Viking Museum & Borg Church

The Lofoten islands themselves are magic, breathtaking and fascinating from the sea. Consisting of approx. 100 miles of rugged mountains of granite and volcanic rocks rising out of the sea, it is difficult to imagine the rich, green vegetation in the valleys, villages and the fishing ports. We begin from Svolvær, the "capital" of the Lofoten islands situated on the island Austvågøy. In former days the islands were quite isolated from one another, with a ferry connection only. Today, bridges and undersea tunnels link the islands. We reach Borg and the Lofotr Viking Museum, the site of the ancient Viking farm, discovered by accident at the end of the last century. It has been reconstructed and is considered to be an archaeological sensation. It has been proven that the Lofoten Islands were a centre of power at the time of the Vikings. The main building itself is 83 metres long surrounded by various exhibitions and reconstructions. Visitors get a very realistic impression of what life must have been like during these harsh times with the smoke from the fireplaces and the cooking smells making it all very real. Reine, Lofoten

Mit roten Fischerhütten an den Ufern des Reinefjords zwischen dramatischen Granitgipfeln gilt Reine als einer der schönsten Orte der Welt. Durchfahrt Trollfjorden

Der Trollfjord ist kaum zu glauben. Ein 100 m breiter Eingang zu einem engen Fjord mit nahezu senkrechten Hängen bis zu 1.100 m Höhe; die Passage schneidet sich durch Austvågøya am Rand der Lofoten. Wenn das Schiff in den Fjord einfährt, wird die Stille nur vom sanften Klang der Maschinen und dem gelegentlichen Schrei eines Seeadlers unterbrochen, der über dem Fjord kreist. The mountains here rise majestically—jagged, ancient, ice-eroded walls that emerge directly from the sea off the north Norwegian coast. With red and white fishermen's huts dotting the shoreline and the surrounding peaks of granite shooting out of Reinefjorden, the village has earned a reputation as "the most beautiful place in the world." Your tour takes you to Å, located at the end of the Lofoten Road, which was once the most important fishing village in the area. Today, it serves primarily as a 'museum' village, where you can see the old bakery, boat houses, and fishermen's cabins, capturing the essence of life here in earlier times. There will be a short walk through the village, offering a glimpse into its historical significance and breathtaking natural beauty. We will enjoy our refreshment at Bakeriet at Å. This charming bakery is attached to the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, offering a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and history while enjoying delicious, freshly-baked goods.

Depart the pier by coach and travel across the forested island of Tromsøya, where the city was founded in 1794. Pass modern suburbs and Langnes Airport before crossing the Sandnessund Bridge to reach the rugged island of Kvaløya (“Whale Island”), known for its dramatic peaks rising over 1,000 metres. A short drive brings you to the Wilderness Centre, home to adventurers Tove Sørensen and Tore Albrigtsen, their team, and more than 300 enthusiastic Alaskan huskies. Both hosts are renowned for their achievements in Arctic endurance racing, including the 1,000 km Finnmark Race and the legendary 1,842 km Iditarod. While their presence cannot be guaranteed, their spirit is felt throughout the centre. Upon arrival, enjoy time meeting the friendly huskies and playful puppies. With guidance from an experienced outdoor leader, you’ll set out on a relaxed trek through rolling Arctic terrain. If you wish, you may take “your own” husky along for the walk—a memorable companion as you explore the open hills and crisp northern air. After the hike, return to the Wilderness Centre for coffee and cake served inside a traditional lavvo, a Sámi-style tent.
