Itinerary
Mazatlan Day 1

Mazatlan is a rare find in that it manages to offer a fascinating colonial history alongside all the attractions of a lively beach resort. Before boarding your boutique cruise, take time to wander the cobblestone streets lined with brightly coloured colonial houses. Or perhaps explore the shady plazas, sampling the cafes and restaurants along the way. Shrimp based dished are a particular speciality here.

Los Islotes and Espiritu Santo Day 2

The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, is a unique corner of the Pacific Ocean. The sea here is thought to be around five million years old, relatively young for a sea, and home to nearly 900 species of fish. Espiritu Santo Island is an archipelago located in the Sea of Cortez and has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2005. The uninhabited islands here support a diverse range of wildlife including several endemic species. Los Islotes is located at the northernmost point of the archipelago and is home to a large colony of sea lions. We will explore Los Islotes and Espiritu Santo, hiking and snorkelling where possible. The seas here are also home to healthy populations of humpback whales, orca and dolphins.

Isla San Pedro Day 3

A steep, rocky island known for its resident sea lion colony; Isla San Pedro is one of the best-preserved ecological reserves in the Sea of Cortez. Whales and dolphins are also frequently spotted feeding in the surrounding waters. The island is an important seabird nesting site, and as we explore the waters and shores of the island we will be keeping an eye out for blue-footed and brown boobies, brown pelicans and red-billed tropicbirds.

Isla Partida & Isla San Esteban Day 4

Also a UNESCO biosphere reserve, Isla Partida is uninhabited with no marinas or hotels. Enjoy a swim in the warm aquamarine waters, relax on one of the white-sand beaches or hike the surrounding desert trails. You can also explore the waters via kayak or snorkelling, looking out for sea stars, sea urchins, colourful fish and playful sea lions. We will also be searching for the rare reptiles and songbirds found on San Esteban Island. There is a good chance that we will spot the endemic San Esteban chuckwalla, a harmless desert lizard

Isla Santa Catalina Day 5

Today we will be exploring Santa Catalina, a rocky island not far from California’s south coast. One of the first things you might notice about the island is the endemic giant barrel cacti, of which there is no shortage. Whilst here we will be searching for reptiles that have adapted well to the local arid climate. We will be keeping an eye out for lizards, geckos, iguana, and the endemic Santa Catalina rattlesnake. This snake is not your typical rattlesnake in that it lost its rattle at some point along its evolutionary journey.

Isla San Jose (cruise) & Isla San Francisco Day 6

One of the larger islands in the Sea of Cortez, there are plentiful activity options on Island San Jose. Photograph the ochre cliffs of the island’s eastern shore or visit the abandoned salt works. Or perhaps discover something rare and unusual as we search the mangroves and lagoons for lizards and songbirds. This afternoon, we sail to Isla San Francisco. With its red sea cliffs, sweeping desert beach and a deep blue half moon bay, it is one of the most striking islands in the region. Immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of this place as you snorkel, hike and relax your afternoon away.

Topolobampo, Sinaloa Day 7

Very few other cruise ships call on the quiet port town of Topolobampo. As a result, the town is less commercialised with a more authentic feel than its more touristy neighbours. In the waters here you’ll find playful bottlenose dolphins, sometimes visible from the ship deck in the evening. You can also explore the mansion of Don Diego de la Vega and or take a luxury train through Mexico’s scenic copper canyon.

Cabo San Lucas Day 8

Situated at the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula, the Los Cabos region is a blend of desert and coastal landscapes. The deep blue azure waters and stunning beaches have lured Hollywood stars and wealthy travellers for decades. Cabos San Lucas is known for its lively nightlife, where visitors can relax by the sea all day before hitting the town in the evening. The natural granite rock archway at Land’s End is the area’s most famous landmark and makes for a very photogenic visit. To learn more about the area, visit the Museo de Historia Natural where you can learn about the geology, botany and anthropology of the region.

At sea Day 9-10

Today we leave Mexico and make our way to our final destination, San Diego. You may wish to meet your fellow expedition goers in the Observation Lounge and share stories of your Swan Hellenic adventures. Our passionate expedition crew will also be on hand to answer any questions you might have. Or alternatively relax in your cabin, taking stock of your Baja escapades.

San Diego Day 11

Disembark SH Minerva today for the final time as we dock in the wonderful city of San Diego. With its laidback surfer vibe and year-round sunshine, there’s little doubt as to how the city acquired its ‘Americas Finest City’ tagline. Take a surfing lesson, head out on a whale watching tour or take a trolley car tour and explore the Hispanic downtown area. The foodie scene here is also renowned, with a heavy Mexican influence, local Californian wines and an impressive craft beer scene, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
