Itinerary Map
San Diego Day 1

With its laidback surfer vibe and year-round sunshine, there’s little doubt where the city acquired its ‘America's Finest City’ tagline. Take a surfing lesson, head out on a whale watching tour or hop on a trolley car tour and explore the Hispanic downtown area. The food here is also fantastic, with a heavy Mexican influence, local Californian wines and an impressive craft beer scene, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Enjoy all that this wonderful city has to offer before boarding your boutique expedition cruise ship.

Santa Cruz Island Day 2

Channel Islands National Park comprises five islands located off the Southern California coast. The islands are uninhabited, with millennia of isolation resulting in the evolution of unique and fascinating ecosystems. The largest of the Channel Islands is Santa Cruz Island, where we will be stopping today. Take a short hike to Cavern Point, a great spot for spotting a passing whale in the waters below. Or continue further to search for frolicking sea lions in the kelp below Potato Harbour, all the while keeping an eye out for the bright blue endemic scrub jay. The kayaking opportunities here are some of the best in California. Take a kayak trip out to Painted Cave, one of the largest sea caves in the world.

Monterey Day 3

Colonised by the Spanish in 1770, the pretty coastal town of Monterey packs in plenty of history. Once a hub for sardine canning, the town was also the site of the Battle of Monterey on 7th July 1846 during the Mexican-American War. The battle occurred on the same day that California became part of the USA, marked by raising the flag over the Monterey Custom House. Follow the 3km Path of History to travel through the city’s fascinating past for yourself. Monterey is also an excellent spot for exploring the surrounding nature. Join a whale-watching trip in search of humpbacks, or head out on a hike at Jacks Peak County Park. End your day at Old Fisherman’s Wharf, sampling the famous creamy clam chowder whilst enjoying wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean.

San Francisco Day 4

Cramped on steep hills at the tip of a peninsula over a major fault line, San Francisco has spent decades working hard just to remain in existence. And it has managed to do much more than that, it has prospered. A place that happily houses counterculture alongside aspiring billionaires, the city is diverse and colourful with an irresistible buzz. As we cruise into San Francisco Bay, take in the iconic views of the water and the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a lot on offer here, so plan your time carefully. Take a cruise out to the infamous Alcatraz Island and tour the notorious prison. Visit the bustling Fisherman’s Wharf and check in on Pier 39’s resident sea lions. Enjoy an authentic Chinese meal in North America’s oldest and most populous Chinatown. Or hop on a cable car for a chance to see the city’s iconic steep streets. If you would prefer to get away from the crowds, cross the bridge for a visit to Muir Woods. A one-hour drive from the downtown area, the woods are home to the coast redwood, a redwood sub-species. The trees here, spared from logging due to their difficult to access location, are thought to be 800-1000 years old and grow up to 80-metres tall.

At sea Day 5

As we cruise to our next destination, spend your day at sea exploring and enjoying the ship’s facilities. You can also spend some time learning about your destination from our knowledgeable onboard experts. Attend an informative lecture, indulge in a relaxing spa treatment, or get in a workout at the onboard gym.

Astoria Day 6

In 1811, Astoria became the first US settlement west of the Mississippi. Located on the mouth of the Columbia River, the city soon became a vibrant and successful port with a strong economy based on fishing and timber. Today, the city embodies a bohemian, Pacific Northwest charm. And for a relatively small place, there is no shortage of things to do. Visit the local maritime museum for a deeper insight into the area’s interesting past, climb the Astoria Column for wonderful views of water and woods below, or visit the many fine restaurants, pubs and boutique shops on offer.

Portland & Multnomah Falls Day 7

Among other things, Portland has a long-held reputation as one of the country’s top culinary destinations. With easy access to fresh ingredients from the bountiful Pacific as well as the fertile inland valleys, food offerings in Portland are plentiful, varied, and good value for money. The city is also renowned for its quirky counterculture, surrounding natural beauty, coffee, microbreweries, and tax-free status. There is plenty to do, see and explore in this fun and lively city. Whilst here we will also visit the magnificent Multnomah Falls. Fed by rainwater and snowmelt, the 189-meter two drop cascade can be experienced from the viewing platform below or by climbing the hiking trails to the top of the falls.

At sea Day 8

We say goodbye to Oregon this morning as we make our way to Port Angeles along the Washington coast. Make sure that you spend some time on deck or in the Observation Bar to appreciate the incredible vistas as we travel north. Gaze at the pine-covered coastline keeping an eye out for bald eagles and whales as we travel. Our passionate expedition crew will also be on hand to answer any questions you might have.

Port Angeles (Olympic National Park) Day 9

The small seaport town of Port Angeles will serve as our gateway to Olympic National Park. This national park was declared a National Monument in 1909 before later receiving its status as a UNESCO biological reserve. Home to three distinct ecosystems: coastline, temperate forest and sub-alpine forest, the park is the crown jewel of the Pacific Northwest. Explore the mountainous area of Hurricane Ridge and enjoy a guided walk through the park’s sub-alpine region. There will be plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife including birds, Roosevelt elk and black bears.

San Juan Islands & Deception Pass Day 10

Today we begin our exploration of the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound. This rugged corner of Washington State is an ecological haven for spotting marine wildlife. Search for resident orca pods with the help of our expedition team. We may also come across humpbacks and minke whales. The islands are also home to a high concentration of birdlife including bald eagles, great blue herons, black oystercatchers and numerous shorebirds. Whilst exploring the area, we will pay a visit to Deception Pass State Park, one of the most photographed locations in Washington State. The park covers miles of scenic shoreline and fascinating trails. Keep an eye out for wildlife as you immerse yourself in this beautifully serene part of the world.

Vancouver Day 11

Depart American waters today as we enter Canada on our way to our final port, Vancouver. Set in between stunning mountain scenery and the waters of the Burrard Inlet, the city is both naturally beautiful and a lively cosmopolitan hub. If you still have some energy for adventure, take a bike ride around Stanley Park’s 10km seawall or perhaps set off on a scenic seaplane trip from the harbour. If you’d prefer a more relaxed pace, explore Vancouver’s world-class culinary scene or take in the city’s renowned art galleries and fascinating museums.
