The phrase “cruise ship” covers vessels of radically different scales. One may carry little more than 150 guests; another can accommodate more than 7,000. Both numbers are accurate, but they describe different products, operating environments and passenger experiences.

An Alaska cruise can look inexpensive in an advertisement and become a very different trip by the time flights, hotels and excursions are added. The cabin fare matters, but it is only one line in the budget. Departure date, ship, room category and the way the itinerary begins and ends can change the total by thousands of dollars. A realistic Alaska cruise cost begins with the fare but does not end there.

Cruise wardrobes have a reputation for being complicated, but most of the confusion comes from treating every ship as though it follows the same rules. It does not. What you wear depends on the day’s activity, the climate and the operator’s idea of an evening dress code. A cruise dress code is better understood as a house style than as an industry-wide rule.

Cruise booking becomes confusing when every decision is made at once. A better order is to choose the voyage first, then the cabin, then examine what the fare contains and what the contract requires. Only after those pieces make sense should the reservation be confirmed. The best way to book a cruise is to make those decisions in sequence rather than all at once.

A cruise ship can look almost stationary from the deck: there is no roadside scenery, and its size smooths out much of the motion. In ordinary service, many ships cover 18 to 20 nautical miles an hour, roughly 20 to 23 mph or 33 to 37 km/h. For most travelers, the useful figure is the typical cruise ship speed in knots, not the theoretical maximum.

Smoking has not disappeared from cruise ships, but the days of treating an open deck as fair game are largely over. On most vessels, it is permitted only in a small number of clearly marked places. Cabins, balconies and nearly all indoor public rooms are normally smoke-free. Any cruise ship smoking policy should be checked for the specific vessel and itinerary.

For most international cruises, the uncomplicated answer is yes: travel with a valid passport book. The confusion comes from a limited rule that allows some US citizens to return from certain round-trip cruises using other documents. That exception is real, but it is much narrower than the phrase “cruise without a passport” makes it sound.

Cruise prices are easy to compare badly. One website shows a low cabin fare, another displays a package with drinks and Wi-Fi, and a third includes taxes that appear later elsewhere. The result is a collection of numbers that look comparable but describe different purchases. The average cruise cost is less useful than a like-for-like comparison, but it is still where many travelers begin.

Packing for a cruise becomes much easier once you stop trying to prepare for every imaginable situation. The useful question is not “What might I possibly want?” but “What would be difficult to replace once the journey has begun?”

A passport book is not compulsory for every US citizen on every Bahamas cruise. Some passengers on qualifying round trips from the United States can use other approved documents. The problem is that “Bahamas cruise without a passport” sounds like a broad rule when it is actually a narrow exception with several conditions attached.
