Love, ice, and emperor penguins: a honeymoon like no other

Some couples choose beaches, others choose cities. For their honeymoon, Kate and Matteo chose ice, whales and sunsets over snowcapped mountains. Read on to discover the romance, challenges and unforgettable surprises they found on their once-in-a-lifetime beginning.

Two years before their honeymoon, Kate and Matteo discovered the thrill of polar cruising on an Arctic voyage with Swan Hellenic. Antarctica soon became the dream, and when it came time to celebrate their marriage, the choice felt inevitable. As Kate puts it, "A trip to Antarctica is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it definitely made our honeymoon feel extra special. Celebrating our honeymoon among icebergs and emperor penguins felt romantic, unforgettable and extreme."

The journey began in Ushuaia, with the legendary Drake Passage ahead. "We were excited but also a bit anxious about sailing the Drake Passage, knowing we wouldn’t see land for around four days," Kate remembers. "That first night was unforgettable – five-meter waves crashing against the hull with the ship rising and dropping like a rollercoaster! At first it felt intense, but we soon got used to it."

What might have seemed daunting quickly turned into exhilaration. “We even tested our balance against the rough seas!" she laughs. "We didn’t get the calm 'Drake Lake,' but the wild side felt like a true adventure."

Magic in the Weddell Sea

Kate still recalls the morning they reached Antarctica. "I remember waking up to new sounds I hadn’t heard while we were at sea," she remembers. "Matteo was already at the window, so I knew we had arrived. I rushed to the porthole, opened the curtains, and the view I saw will stay with me forever."

That first impression was unforgettable. "The dark, flat sea covered with broken ice, crew members already zipping around in Zodiacs, and snow falling all around us. That first glance of Antarctica was pure magic," says Kate. The landscapes exceeded every expectation. "It’s definitely not the kind of backdrop I’m used to seeing every day, it was truly breathtaking!" says Kate.

"The Arctic cruise two years earlier was the first time I’d ever seen such icy scenery, and it was jaw-dropping day after day. Antarctica was just as extraordinary, but in its own unique way – very different from Svalbard – more of a pure, flawless white."

Encounters with ice and wildlife

One of the moments that stays with Kate is from the Weddell Sea. "I remember being on a Zodiac expedition, looking at all the broken ice around us. Our boat was surrounded by icebergs so uniquely shaped they looked sculpted, and in that moment, I got lost in the beauty of nature and thought, 'We’ll never top this honeymoon!'"

Wildlife also made the experience unforgettable. "We were lucky enough to see three juvenile emperor penguins on our travels," recalls Kate. "The first popped up while we were having tea in the lounge, perched on a tiny iceberg – we thought it was an Adélie until the expedition team announced it was actually a young emperor! And the other two appeared on our final landing at Tay Head, just five meters away, napping on the ice. It was the perfect farewell and made the honeymoon even more special."

Even the quiet moments mattered. "Our room was so lovely!" she grins. "The honeymoon decorations were a really thoughtful touch and made us feel so special. It’s those little extras that help make the experience even more memorable."

Unforgettable moments

The crew added warmth to the icy surroundings. "The crew and expedition guides were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and always ready to assist. We’d invite them to dinner or just hang out in the observation lounge chatting. We’d ask a thousand questions about their adventures and they were always happy to talk."

She and Matteo often shared moments of wonder on their voyage. "It happened more than once, and we’ll be forever grateful," says Kate. "One evening, after dinner, Matteo and I went up to the Swan Nest deck for some fresh air. I’m the 'whale spotter' between the two of us, and since Matteo is the photographer, we thought we’d combine our skills. We were lucky to catch an amazing sunset – and although we saw some whales in the distance, it was really the colors that left us speechless."

The light itself became a memory to treasure. "We’ve all seen sunsets before, but watching the light bounce off the icebergs and snowcapped mountains was absolutely unreal. And it’s such a special place – so remote and secluded – how can it not feel romantic?"

Memories that last a lifetime

When asked what she would say to other couples about choosing an expedition honeymoon, Kate doesn’t hesitate: "Do it!" she smiles. "If you're adventurous, spontaneous and love an adrenaline kick then go for it. You get the best of both worlds with Swan Hellenic, you sail in comfort, get treated like royalty, and at the same time you’re exploring and venturing into the wilderness."

For Kate, part of the beauty was in embracing the unexpected. "One thing that I think is very important to remember is that you need to be flexible," she explains. "During the time onboard things don’t always go to plan, the unexpected happens and situations change fast, so it pays to remember that."

The cruise shaped how the newly weds want to travel together in future. "Traveling to the Antarctic made us want to experience more of the world’s remote places. It showed us that the kind of voyages Swan Hellenic offers are experiences we want to invest in."

From the wild beauty of the Weddell Sea to the silence of snow falling on ice, Kate and Matteo’s honeymoon was more than just a journey – it was the beginning of a shared life built on adventure, discovery and wonder. "We kicked started our lives as newlyweds in the best possible way," she says. "I couldn’t have asked for a better honeymoon." Their story shows that romance can be found in the most unexpected places, even at the edge of the world.
