Kangerlussuaq

This Greenland cruise carries you from Kangerlussuaq deep into the island's northwest, along a coastline of calving glaciers, iceberg-choked fjords and settlements at the very edge of the habitable world. Over twelve nights you sail from the Arctic Circle to Qaanaaq and Siorapaluk — among the northernmost inhabited places on Earth — and back through Disko Bay, where the ice never stops moving. The voyage opens in Eternity Fjord, where the Evigheds Glacier spills from the Greenland Ice Sheet beneath the wings of white-tailed eagles, and continues to the black-sand beaches and basalt columns of Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island. Further north lie heart-shaped Uummannaq, sheltered by glaciated peaks and inhabited for over 4,500 years; Thule, where Arctic wilderness meets Cold War history; and the Polar Inuit communities of Qaanaaq and Siorapaluk, where dog sleds remain a way of life and traditions have endured largely unchanged. Turning south, the ship calls at Upernavik with its Norse runestone and the world's largest seabird cliffs nearby, at the thundering face of Eqip Sermia, and finally at Ilulissat, the UNESCO-listed icefjord that produces a tenth of all Greenland's icebergs. Few expeditions to Greenland reach this far north. Throughout the voyage, Zodiac cruises bring you close to the ice, guided hikes lead across tundra and basalt, and expert lectures in glaciology, Arctic wildlife and Inuit history give shape to what you see. Like all our Greenland expeditions, this journey combines genuine polar exploration with the comfort of a boutique expedition ship — sauna, hot tub and observation decks waiting after every landing.
