In practice, your packing is shaped less by the ship’s headline allowance than by the journey to the ship, the storage in your stateroom and your ability to move the bags yourself.

Living on a cruise ship costs anywhere from the low tens of thousands of dollars per person each year to seven figures, depending on which version of the idea you mean. Renting long-stay accommodation aboard a residential ship sits at the affordable end. Stringing conventional or world cruises together usually costs more per day. Buying outright is a different market again, from fixed-term arrangements costing tens of thousands to purpose-built residences priced like high-end property ashore.

The phrase “cruise ship” covers vessels of radically different scales. One may carry little more than 150 guests; another can accommodate more than 7,000. Both numbers are accurate, but they describe different products, operating environments and passenger experiences.

Cruise wardrobes have a reputation for being complicated, but most of the confusion comes from treating every ship as though it follows the same rules. It does not. What you wear depends on the day’s activity, the climate and the operator’s idea of an evening dress code. A cruise dress code is better understood as a house style than as an industry-wide rule.

On many mainstream cruise lines, a baby must be at least 6 months old on embarkation day. The minimum commonly rises to 12 months on certain transoceanic and remote itineraries and on sailings with three or more consecutive days at sea. What matters is the child’s age on departure, not at the time of booking.
